The admission marks a considerable turnaround from Marchionne, who stated two years back that a Ferrari without an interior combustion engine would be “an almost obscene concept”.
Marchionne has watched Tesla’s advancement with interest. Elon Musk’s attire just recently revealed a new Roadster, with a declared 0-60mph time of 1.9 seconds as well as a likely top speed of 250mph. Power comes from a 200kWh battery pack as well as three electric motors. If these figures are achievable, it would make the Tesla the fastest accelerating vehicle on the road.
Marchionne continued: “People are amazed with what Tesla did with the supercar. I am not trying to minimise what Elon did however I believe it is doable by all of us.”
The concern of range, however, is proving the huge stumbling block, he claimed. “You’re going to go genuine quick however exactly how long do you last? We have seen that in formula E, you have to modification your vehicle in the race. We requirement a great deal more work to be done before we can make that a legitimate answer, motorised sports cars.”
Marchionne provided no indicator exactly how close an all-electric Ferrari is to fruition. McLaren is already testing prototypes for an all-electric supercar.
